It still bothers me
HALF A CENTURY years later
that I was completely unaware of
10cc's megahit (a legit word a la NY Times) masterpiece "I'm Not in Love"
at the time, do you see, AT THE TIME (it was a hit)
it passed me by, just passed me by
And which I only <apparently> first heard when it was announced
two years later
on a local station
let's face it probably Capital Radio (1977)
as the Listeners' Favourite Song of all Time or some such, I mean
I know I was an absolute gorm but then
we were all aware of "Rubber Bullets"
and "Life Is a Minestrone" at least
from the Top of the Pops style 79p LPs
which weren't excuse me I know this now by the Original Artists
I was actually shocked disappointed (and appalled) when I found out
But the key point is WHERE was I when "I'm Not in Love" was a massive hit
throughout that 1975 summer
TOTP was the ONE key viewing, but I wasn't there? we
didn't spend the summers anywhere exotic
Margate at best and
thus I assume
logically
there must have been
a kidnapping
The year after we all knew "Art for Art's Sake"
and "I'm Mandy Fly Me", singing along with the boys
while playing cricket actually and what's wrong with that
so why was their biggest hit
a complete unknown until I heard it
on that countdown two years later
it's never sat right with me since
