That's the Story of my Life

Too many years had passed
I'd missed my chance
been years since I'd seen you
now here before me
a vision in jet black hair
and yellow trousers some say pants

Local mums knew the score they had an
underground mushroom network, mine
took me to visit Rosalind's mum
aged nine, and it was
only
just
down
the road

Where had you been all those
long long years when
you had been here all that time
and why -

Now of course
we had nothing to say to each other

'Oh they've gone all shy'

Watch cartoons on tv

Some mutually resentful
appraisal of plastic
trinket
substitutes

An unspoken realisation that
our destinies had been ruined

And I say with the greatest respect
fuck you mums (some say moms)
for keeping us apart

Pre-school we'd been
inseparable penguins

Every morning running
into each other like
little magnets
serious talk of walking /
waddling hand-in-hand
down the aisle together

Ridiculous fantasy life
